BACKGROUND

Mr. Hicks founded the Hicks & Associates firm in 2006. Before founding Hicks & Associates he was a partner with a major Canadian law firm.

Mr. Hicks qualified as a patent agent in Canada in 1994 and in the United States in 1995. He  received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1986 from Queens University (Biochemistry) and a Master of Applied Science degree (Chemical Engineering) from the University of Ottawa in 1990.

Prior to joining the patent profession in 1992, Mr. Hicks worked as a research engineer in the development of an implantable artificial heart at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Specifically, he worked in the development and testing of electrochemical power sources and biomaterials, as well as specific electrical sub-systems for artificial hearts.

PRACTICE

Mr. Hicks’ practice focuses on patent application drafting, prosecution and the management of worldwide intellectual property portfolios including patents and industrial designs. Over the years, he has obtained hundreds of U.S., Canadian and foreign patents for his clients across a wide variety of technical disciplines including chemical engineering, chemistry, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, computer & systems engineering, biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering.

Mr. Hicks is active within the intellectual property profession, particularly in the training of patent agents both within his firm and to the profession as a whole. He is an author of several scientific papers, has authored articles on various patent related topics and is a Fellow of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC). He is a current lecturer/tutor and past course director of the McGill University/IPIC Introduction to Patents course, has been a tutor and lecturer at FICPI patent courses and is a regular speaker at international patent conferences.

In his spare time, he is an active sailor, cross-country skier, tri-athlete and cross-country skiing race official. For the past ten years, he has skippered the Canadian team boat in the annual Patent Cup regatta. He completed his first full Ironman triathlon in August 2011 and was the Chief of Competition and co-organizer of the 2011 Canadian cross-country skiing championships hosted in Canmore in March 2011. He is a Level III cross-country skiing official/Technical Delegate and serves on the Board of Directors of the Alberta World Cup Society, a non-profit organization established to promote high-performance cross-country skiing in Canada including the hosting of World Cup cross-country skiing events. He is presently on the organizing committee for World Cup 2012 which will be hosted in Canmore in December 2012.

He can also be seen on DVD in Brad Pitt's 2007 movie "The Assassination of Jesse James" as an aristrocratic gentlemen dodging a "take-down" of Robert Ford (Casey Affleck) during the governor's ball.
