BACKGROUND
Mr. Hicks founded the Hicks & Associates firm in 2006, prior to which he was a partner with a major Canadian law firm.
Mr. Hicks qualified as a patent agent in Canada in 1994 and in the United States in 1995. Before that he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1986 from Queens University majoring in Biochemistry and a Master of Applied Science degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Ottawa in 1990.
Prior to joining the patent profession in 1992, Mr. Hicks worked as a research engineer in the development of an implantable artificial heart. Specifically, he worked in the development and testing of electrochemical power sources and biomaterials, as well as specific electrical sub-systems for artificial hearts.
PRACTICE
Mr. Hicks’ practice focuses on patent application drafting, prosecution and the management of worldwide intellectual property portfolios including patents and industrial designs. Over the years, he has obtained hundreds of U.S., Canadian and foreign patents for his clients across a wide variety of technical disciplines including chemical engineering, chemistry, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, computer & systems engineering, biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering.
Mr. Hicks is active within the intellectual property profession, particularly in the training of patent agents both within his firm and to the profession as a whole. He is an author of several scientific papers, has authored articles on various patent related topics and is a Fellow of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC). He is a current lecturer/tutor and past course director of the McGill University/IPIC Introduction to Patents course, has been a tutor and lecturer at patent courses and is a regular speaker at international patent conferences.
In his spare time, he is an active sailor, cross-country skier, tri-athlete and cross-country skiing race official.
He can also be seen on DVD in Brad Pitt's 2007 movie "The Assassination of Jesse James".
